CUETO, CHAPMAN SHARING THE CY IN REDS-HOT CINCY? ~ Either would be the first Reds pitcher to win MLB’s coveted prize. Tonight, they may share the hill, at Citizens Bank Park in Philly. Later this year, perhaps, some hardware.

Aroldis Chapman

The 2012 Cy Young race, already working with a Reddish hue in the Senior Circuit, may featureย two of the leading Cy Young candidates in the National Leagueย on the same hill tonight. For the same team.

As of a few minutes ago, the official website of Major League Baseball listed Cincinnati Reds starter Johnny Cueto first, and closer Aroldis Chapman third, in its official “2012 MLB Baseball Cy Young Predictor.” (sometimes ‘The Predictor’ link works, sometimes it sends you to the MLB page with the all-time winners list ….. here’s what I found: http://www.espn.go.com/mlb/features/cyyoung)

Johnny Cueto

The Cy Young Award, started in 1956, was originally awarded to the best pitcher in all of MLBย for its first 11 seasons (Don Newcombe of the Brooklyn Dodgers was the first).

There has never been a Cy Young Award winner in Cincinnati.

Not Don Gullett.

Not Jose Rijo (World Series MVP, 1990).

Not Jim Maloney,ย nor even Tom Seaver.

(Seaver did win The Cy three times with The Mets, in 1969, 1973 and 1975).

Split in 1967 between the American and National Leagues, there’s only been one tie for The CyDenny McLain of the Detroit Tigers repeated after the 1969 season, and shared it with Mike Cuellar of the Baltimore Orioles.

Split the difference?

Cy Young Award for 1957, Warren Spahn (Brewers)
