A Cincinnati Dynamic Duo: Retired Couple and former P&Gers (aka Procterites) Doloris and Bill Learmonth, Thrive with Active Lifestyle

Power To The Procterites: Husband Wins Five Medals at U.S. Masters Swimming Championships; Wife’s 25-Year Fitness Journey Inspires

Cincinnati, Ohio – September 30, 2024 — In a compelling testament to vitality and perseverance, Bill and Doloris Learmonth, a dynamic Cincinnati couple, are living their golden years to the fullest at Deupree House in Hyde Park.

Married for 55 years and both retired (Bill as a market research manager at P&G, and Doloris as an attorney), the Learmonths are not just enjoying their retirement — they’re redefining it.

Bill Learmonth excelled this summer at the U.S. Masters Swimming National Championship in Indianapolis. Competing in seven events among 2,300 adult athletes, Bill earned five medals in the 85-89 year-old category: one Gold, two Silver, and two Bronze, showcasing his extraordinary dedication to the sport.

As an avid swimmer, Bill continues to shine in various major accredited sports competitions for older adults. This has included the World Masters Games in New Zealand, the National Senior Games (held every two years in a different US city), the annual Ohio State Senior Olympics, and the annual Huntsman World Senior Games in Utah. This is in addition to regional and national swim meets sponsored by U.S. Masters Swimming, an organization made up of 60,000+ adult members.

Not only is Bill a competitive swimmer, but he’s also a competitive racewalker and former runner. His impressive haul of gold medals reflects his commitment to fitness and competitive spirit, even in his golden years — and further proves that age is no barrier to success.

I always try to remind myself that good health is the real goal,” Bill explains. “But once I’m in the water, it’s all about swimming my best and aiming for those medals. Competing with others in my age group makes me feel youthful again. Having Deupree’s indoor pool whenever I need it helps me stay on track with my goals year-round.”

Doloris Learmonth, a distinguished former president of the Cincinnati Bar Association and a trailblazer as the first woman to lead a major Cincinnati law firm, echoes Bill’s sentiments. Her impressive career also includes

roles as a trustee for the UC Foundation and the Cincinnati Zoo. Doloris and Bill chose Deupree House, part of the Episcopal Retirement Services community, for its commitment to an active lifestyle and top-notch amenities.

Doloris is also passionate about fitness. For the past 25 years, she has incorporated workouts into her regular routine—including one-on-one training and weightlifting with a personal trainer.

Our life here at Deupree has become simpler and more enjoyable,” Doloris says. “The excellent facilities support a high quality of life and health. You have to start somewhere—standing still is just going backward.”

For the Learmonths, Deupree House isn’t just a premier retirement community; it’s a thriving hub that supports their active lifestyle. With access to a state-of-the-art fitness center and a heated indoor pool, they continue to stay fit, healthy, and engaged in their passions.

There’s no excuse not to stay in shape as you age,” Bill adds. “Deupree House provides everything we need to keep moving forward.”

Bill and Doloris Learmonth are not only a testament to the benefits of a proactive retirement but also a shining example of how embracing an active lifestyle can lead to extraordinary achievements—no matter your age.

Research continues to show the widespread benefit of regular workouts with weights and flexibility exercises, no matter your age. About 150 minutes a week of strength training can slow the loss of bone and muscle and improve balance, reducing the risk of a fall. Regular exercise also defends the body’s immune system.
